Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades in Greece with population of about 18.000 and was the center of archaic Cycladic culture. Naxos is known as a source of emery, a type of stone as the best abrasives until today.

The capital of Naxos is Chora and the island has many villages, most of which have a great tourist development. Naxos is famous for the production of local products as they are cultivated olive groves, vineyards, potatoes and all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Naxos is also known for the livestock farming and cheese making. This is of course due to the fact that Naxos, unlike other islands, is inhabited by locals who do not abandon the island during the winter. The island also incorporates foreigners who decide to settle permanently in Naxos and join the island’s lifestyle.

In Naxos you can really find what you are looking for. Hiking lovers will find wonderful routes in the picturesque villages and on the mountain Za (the largest Cycladic mountain). The central part of the island, in particular, hides monuments and sights accessible only by hiking. Cyclists will also not be complaining as there are routes suitable for all tastes.

The island is a perfect place for windsurfing and kitesurfing as the endless coastline in combination with the meltemi (strong north wind) are a hotspot for lovers of extreme sports.

Due to its geographical location Naxos is an ideal destination for day trips to the other islands. Naxos is the central island of the Cyclades and around there are Paros, Mykonos, Koufonissia, Schinoussa, Donoussa, Amorgos, Santorini, Ios, Sifnos, Syros, Tinos, Folegandros, Milos. During the summer season there are especially ferry routes that you can visit one of these nearby destinations on a daily tour or take one-day cruises on private boats.
