Discover the island of Naxos

Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, consisting of beautiful beaches and picturesque villages. A walk in the castle will take you to other times and the sunset of Portara will make you fall in love with our island. Naxos is also famous for its good and affordable food, enjoy it in a tavern on the sea or in one of our villages. To enjoy the beauties of the island we recommend 3-day or 5-day excursions as well as unique experiences that you can try. DAY 1:

On the first day in Naxos we recommend visiting the beaches of Agios Prokopios as a natural continuation of the beach of Agia Anna and Plaka.

Most of them have umbrellas and deck chairs in front of beach bars and taverns. Continuing it meets Orco, where small loose bays are formed that offer more peace and relaxation.
After your bath you can visit the Temple of Demeter in Sagri. In the village of Sagri, at Gyroula you will find one of the most remarkable buildings of ancient Naxos, the Temple of Demeter. It dates back to the decade 530-520 BC. and is of Ionic rhythm. The sanctuary of Demeter along with the temple of Yiría are considered architectural precursors of the Parthenon.

DAY 2:

The second day you can take a beautiful stroll in the center of the island. Start your walk from the picturesque Halki with its magnificent neoclassical mansions, with its large balconies, garlands on the roofs and paved courtyards. In recent years, Halki has also acquired a very interesting market that includes art galleries, a restaurant with special flavors and a beautifully landscaped coffee, sweet and snack area in the village square.

Continue your stroll by taking a stop at Filoti, an impressive example of a lively and culturally rich village, which confirms the first image the visitor walks from the entrance to the central square of the village with the big plane tree. In the area around Filoti is worth visiting the picturesque fountain of the Aries and the cave of Zah on the mountainside for hikers.
Ten minutes from Filoti is Apiranthos, built at the foot of Mount Fanari, at an altitude of 600 meters. It is 28 km from the capital of the island. Venetian towers, museums, beautifully old two-storey houses, marble cobbled streets, scenic squares with cafes and taverns to traditional food.

DAY 3:

On the third day you can visit the northern beaches of the island as long as there is no air. Passing through Hilia Vrissi and Abram to Apollo of Naxos is the beautiful beach of the homonymous settlement located on the northeast coast of Naxos. Sandy beach with clear blue water Apollonas beach and well protected by the southwest is ideal for all tastes. There are few tavernas and some small shops on Apollonas beach, while there is a small pier for fishing and small boats.
West and above the seaside village of Apollon is one of the two ancient quarries of Naxos where the greatest art of antiquity, the marble sculpture, began. The “kuros” of Naxos are the oldest in the Greek world and from this ancient quarry of Apollo were transported to Delos, but also to other places hundreds of half-timbered statues and marble volumes, most notably in Melanes Naxos. In the ancient quarry of Apollo there is the oversized kouros (11 meters) of God Dionysus.

DAY 4:

On the fourth day you will get tired from the distance of the island you can swim in Mikri Vigla. Mikri Vigla beach of Naxos is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island, divided by a rock into two parts, the “Virgin” in the north and the “Limanaki” in the south.

It is ideal for windsurfing and is considered the best beach in Naxos for kite surfing, as the bay is closed and the wind is convenient for jumping and flying over the coast of Naxos. If you want to continue swimming on a quieter beach, visit the Alikos peninsula of Naxos, under the cedar-forest, form small creeks that host beautiful sandy beaches with blue-green waters. It is a small but exotic and sheltered beach enclosed by cedar trees. Access is easy and the road is from asphalt.
In the area of Mikri Vigla and Alikos there are taverns, necessary after the sea.

DAY 5:

On Thursdays you can again take a beautiful stroll in the village of Emerica. The traditional village of Naxos, Koronos, is built on the slopes of a verdant ravine, at an altitude of 540 meters. Houses of interesting architecture, a picturesque square with arbors and flowers, paved alleys and numerous stairs, elaborate arches create a romantic atmosphere that excites and fascinates the visitor.

To swim, the bay of Moutsouna in Naxos hosts two beautiful beaches with fine sand and clear shallow waters, ideal for families with young children. The first one, Agios Giannis, stretches in front of the picturesque fish taverns of Moutsouna, while the second, Tigani, is located a little further south and has two hotel complexes with restaurants and cafes.

• Eggares is a small flat village in western Naxos, a few kilometers north of Naxos. In Eggares there are 2 beautifully restored olives:

  1. The first, according to the indication in its barracks dates back to 1885, and today houses the Community Office and the hospital practice.
  2. The second, the Museum-Olive Oil mill, according to the indication of its press is dated in 1884, but according to the testimonies of the inhabitants of the area it is much older, and probably existed since the beginning of the 19th century.

• 8 km from the port is Potamia, one of the most beautiful villages of the island built in a valley rich in vegetation. It consists of 4 settlements and the permanent population amounts to 360 inhabitants engaged in agriculture and livestock farming. Its name comes from the rivers that cross the village and along with the springs create this green oasis all year round.
• A short distance from the Monastery, on the way to Chalki, is one of the oldest churches of Naxos, Panagia Drosiani. The temple, formerly a Catholic monastery, has a unique architecture with bare masonry, a three-conical conical dome with a dome, and three single-room chapels with domes on the northern side. Some of the frescoes that have survived are dated to the 6th century and are considered by many scholars as the oldest in the Balkans, while the rest belong to the period from the 11th to the 14th century.
• The Monastery of Fotodoti is located north of the village of Danakos and is the oldest and perhaps the most important Naxos fortress. At an altitude of about 500 meters, with centuries-old oak trees, fig trees and vineyards around, a century-old plane tree in its courtyard, and magnificent views of the blue waters of the Aegean Sea and Donoussos, “Photodot”, as it is called by the locals, and its religious significance is also a natural attraction.
